The heat exchanger is often the most expensive component to fix on a furnace. Repairing or replacing a heat exchanger requires professional expertise due to the complexity of the task. The heat exchanger plays a crucial role in transferring heat to the air, and if it develops cracks or leaks, it can lead to safety concerns, such as carbon monoxide leaks. Replacement costs vary based on the furnace type, brand, and labor fees, but they typically represent a substantial portion of the overall furnace repair expenses. Regular maintenance can help prevent issues and prolong the life of the heat exchanger.
A common failure for a furnace is a malfunctioning or failed ignitor. The ignitor is responsible for initiating the furnace's heating process by igniting the burner. Over time, ignitors can wear out or become faulty, leading to issues like no heat production. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of the ignitor can help prevent this common failure and ensure the efficient operation of the furnace.
The cost to check a furnace varies but typically falls within the range of $80 to $150. HVAC technicians may charge a service fee that includes a basic inspection of the furnace, checking for issues like gas leaks, carbon monoxide levels, and overall system performance. Additional costs may arise if any repairs or component replacements are needed. Regular furnace check-ups are advisable for safety, efficiency, and early detection of potential problems.

Finally got the Smiths in Taylors set up with a brand new water heater today! Their old Rheem tank was leaking from the bottom - totally rusted out after 15 years of service. Replaced it with a new 50-gallon Bradford White with a 12-year warranty. Had to modify some of the existing plumbing since the new unit has different connection heights. Added expansion tank which wasn't on the original setup (required by current code). Also installed new shutoff valves since the old ones were corroded and barely functioning. Made sure everything was up to code with proper venting and pressure relief valve. The drain pan and line were good to go, so reused those. Got everything connected, filled, and tested - no leaks! Made sure the temperature was set properly and verified good hot water flow at all fixtures. The whole family was thrilled to have reliable hot water again after limping along with the old unit for weeks.
